The Love Occult Atelier (intuitiveheather)
Today, we take an in depth look at Style # 2: The Dismissive-Avoidant and the Hyper Independence Trap. If anxious attachment says “I need you to survive,” dismissive-avoidant attachment says “I only need myself, and relying on others is dangerous.”
The Origin of Hyper-Independence….. When Authority Wasn’t Safe
Hyper-independence is actually a brilliant adaptive survival response. For many of us this skill was forged in our early years, where the environment we lived in or the people who were supposed to protect, guide, and support us simply were not safe.
For many this didn’t just start with caregivers, it was reinforced by authority figures. It was the teacher who humiliated you, the preacher or church leader who used guilt and moral control to manipulate you, the mentor who abused their position of power, or the parents who made love and safety completely conditional.
When the people who held authority over your world proved to be untrustworthy, volatile, or controlling, your younger self made a very critical calculation….. depending on anyone in authority leads to shrinking, feeling trapped, or being stripped of your basic dignity. The only person who will ever truly protect me, is me.”
How it Manifests in our Adult Lives and Relationships: The Very Real Visceral Reactions to the feelings of Being Controlled
That childhood survival shield doesn’t simply vanish when you become an adult. It follows you into your daily interactions, especially when dealing with authority, guidance, or decision making.
If a partner, family member or boss steps into your space your nervous system doesn’t just register mild irritation, an internal alarm sounds! When that alarm does sounds, it isn’t just attitude, it can be a full blown nervous system surge. You can experience very intense physical sensations such as fear, shaking, loss of energy, laboured breathing, or panicked thinking. This is the exact moment your body shifts into fight-or-flight, flooding you with intense adrenaline to ensure you stay in control and out of harm’s way.
The Key to Shifting Out of This Pattern and the Path to Unshakable Self Security
Healing isn’t about going to war with yourself or shaming your survival instincts, it’s about honoring the younger you who carried that weight when no one else would or could for whatever reason. It’s about telling our younger selves… thank you, you were so brave and I’m so proud of you… and then gently taking over the job. It’s about recognizing the profound self love behind why these attachments were built in the first place.
It’s at this point that you finally understand you no longer have to wait for someone else to make you feel safe. You have grown into the protector you always needed. When you step into that role with tenderness instead of self-judgment, power shifts out of the past and settles quietly right back where it belongs, with you.
