Ever wanted to reach the very depths of your soul .. to connect with your higher or authentic self on a different level? You might want to try ‘Journeying’, a form of meditation that is done through listening to the sounds of drums, or ‘drumming’.

Drums have been traditionally used to help spiritual practitioners, healers and those who practice meditation to develop and enhance their abilities. Taking journeys of the soul can result in a greater understanding of ourselves along with a better understanding of the world around us.

How is this done?

Usually done in a group of two or more people and these groups are referred to as ‘drumming circles’. In my experiences I have also done these sessions alone while playing a drumming CD or cassette tape. I was able to accomplish the same result.

In beginning a ceremony or session the seeker should be comfortably seated or reclined and should ask questions of the Universe. The drumming should then begin, in a constant, rythmic beat. The Journey of meditation then leads the seeker into altered levels of reality and helps one to connect with insights for healing, and the answers to the questions that were asked.

The drum acts as a medium through which the seeker reaches these unvisited levels of consciousness – the journeyer is able to “ride” the drumbeat into altered states. Focusing on the steady, rythmic beat of the drum allows us to be ‘drawn in’ ...and the power of this focus on the drumming can be amazingly powerful..one should literally ‘feel’ the experience of being drawn in to another level of awareness.

Traditional Native American drumming is sometimes referred to as the Shaman’s “horse”. By following the repetitive and consistent rhythm, the mind’s inner chatter quiets, and the pathway is opened for the mind and heart to freely express themselves through images, symbols, songs and chants, tones, colors, sensations and a wonderful sense of “awareness”.

One can safely bring oneself back up from the Journey at any time .. or the ‘drummer’ can signify that it is time to ‘come back’ ...

Through Journeying the participants often ‘know’ the answers to the questions asked. In addition, increased levels of awareness regarding life’s purpose, or the things that are holding them back are revealed. Or one may simply find that the mind and heart are increasingly awakened to the joys and bliss that each new day holds.
